Commercial Truck drivers are regulated by The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), whose primary mission is to prevent truck collision fatalities and injuries. Trucker safety rules are intended to protect the public from unsafe trucking conditions. Unfortunately, when these rules are violated and truck drivers do not comply with the rules, innocent drivers are needlessly endangered. Activities of the FMCSA contribute to the following: ensuring safety in motor carrier operations through strong enforcement of safety regulations, targeting high-risk carriers and commercial motor vehicle drivers, improving safety information systems and commercial motor vehicle technologies, strengthening commercial motor vehicle equipment and operating standards, and increasing safety awareness. To accomplish these activities, the Administration works with Federal, State, and local enforcement agencies, the motor carrier industry, labor and safety interest groups, and others.
Unfortunately, fatal truck crashes happen nearly 11 times every single day on average, killing nearly 4,000 people each year and more than 100,000 people are injured every year in truck crashes.
The American Trucking Associations estimates that only about ten percent of all trucks on the road have some kind of active safety technology.
